Mentorship

Project Life's mentorship program pairs up individuals living with MBC and caretakers with mentors who are also living with MBC or who are also caretakers. Our program "LIFE" Mentorship Program stands for "Living in Full Empowerment" and it is our goal for all participants, staff, mentors, and mentees, to reach this place together.

Mentees

Looking for a mentor?

First, let’s start with our core values, as organized by the rooms of a house:

    •    Compassion (Den): Love in action—recognize suffering and take steps to help.
   •    Connections (Front Porch): Introductions to trustworthy people and resources, guiding self-discovery.
   •    Camaraderie (Kitchen): Foster community by connecting individuals walking similar paths to share experiences.
   •    Courageous (Rec Room): Listen, provide honest suggestions, and always speak the truth with care.
   •    Confidential (Bedroom): Respect confidences and maintain privacy unless help is requested.
   •    Considerate (Office): Treat all individuals and information with care and respect, fostering mutual kindness.
   •    Community (Living Room): Build a loving, supportive environment where all contribute and thrive based on their strengths.

Second, what can you expect from us at Project Life?  We invite you to hold us accountable to these commitments to each of you – we want to always be doing better and learning from each element of our efforts.

• Connection: Pairing mentors and mentees based on shared core values, diagnoses, and experiences for meaningful relationships.

• Collaboration: Offering tailored care and support by fostering ongoing conversations to meet individual needs.

• Continuing Education: Providing voluntary, feedback-driven opportunities to learn and grow together.

• Communication: Encouraging feedback through formal and informal evaluations to improve experiences.

• Continuation: Regularly assessing participation to ensure alignment and growth within the program, guided by the Director of Mentorship.

Mentors

Looking to become a mentor?

In addition to our core values listed above, our mentors can expect a highly supportive environment.  We invite you to hold us accountable to these commitments to each of you – we want to always be doing better and learning from each element of our efforts.

  • Training – we ask that you attend each part of our program so that you get the full range of preparation. Currently, our training consists of three 2-hour training sessions, with homework, a vision boarding class specific to mentoring, and an exit interview. We estimate that this training will be approximately ten (10) hours spread out over six (6) weeks to fully prepare and integrate you.

  • Support – we recognize that each person will seek out different elements of support and we strive to meet each of you where you are. In light of this, we will offer different elements of support and connection for all of our mentors. What support each of you needs will be an ongoing conversation and we invite your input, always.

  • Ongoing Education – offerings will be drawn from our own experiences and the feedback we get from each of you. All ongoing education will be voluntary yet highly encouraged.

  • Evaluations – we will seek to learn from each of you and from each experience and will be asking you to give us feedback in both formal and informal ways.

  • Continuation – every mentor and mentee will be consistently evaluated for participation in the program and the determination of whether participation will be ongoing will be sole province of the Director of Mentorship for Project Life.
